His time inside the Walls caused him to develop dissociative identity disorder as a coping mechanism — he genuinely forgot his mission and believed he was a loyal member of the Survey Corps. When his identity as the Armored Titan was finally exposed, the psychological fracture became complete. Reiner's guilt over his role in the deaths of Marco and countless others consumed him, leading to repeated suicidal ideation. Despite everything, Reiner's will to survive and protect the next generation of Warriors — particularly Falco Grice — drove him to continue fighting.
