ODM Gear

Overview

Omni-Directional Mobility Gear, commonly abbreviated as ODM gear, is the signature equipment of the Paradis military forces. This revolutionary apparatus uses gas-propelled grappling hooks and retractable steel cables to enable three-dimensional movement, allowing soldiers to navigate urban environments and forested areas with incredible speed and agility. The gear consists of a waist-mounted gas canister connected to trigger mechanisms on the hips, with blade handles that activate the grappling hooks when squeezed. Users can fire anchor points into buildings, trees, or other surfaces and use the retraction force to propel themselves through the air at high velocity, changing direction instantly by releasing and refiring the anchors.

Function

ODM gear was specifically designed to give human soldiers a mobility advantage against Titans, allowing them to reach the nape of the neck at the back of the Titan's head which is the only vulnerable spot that can kill a Titan. The gear enables soldiers to execute precise slashing maneuvers by swinging past Titans at high speed, using centrifugal force combined with ultrahard steel blades to cut through Titan flesh. Mastering ODM gear requires exceptional spatial awareness, core strength, and three years of intensive training in the Training Corps. The gear's gas supply is the limiting factor in combat situations, with experienced soldiers carefully managing their fuel reserves to maintain combat effectiveness during prolonged engagements against multiple Titans.

Users

ODM gear is standard issue for all branches of the Paradis military, including the Survey Corps, Garrison Regiment, and Military Police, though the quality and configuration may vary between branches. The Survey Corps uses the most advanced and aggressive configurations optimized for high-speed combat against Titans in open terrain, while the Military Police uses slightly different variants tuned for urban patrol and crowd control within Wall Sina. Exceptional users like Levi Ackerman can push ODM gear beyond its intended performance limits, executing maneuvers that seem physically impossible to ordinary soldiers. The gear was invented over a century ago by Angel Aaltonen, a figure whose contributions to humanity's survival are celebrated but whose full story remains shrouded in mystery.
